Here is some follow-up information on two recent posts here:
- The votes are in, and the two front-runner names for Pluto’s newest moon are “Vulcan” and “Cerberus”. The selection of Vulcan follows on a campaign moutned by Star Trek‘s William Shatner, although the name, as that of the ancient metalsmith god of fire and volcanoes, is not inappropriate for Pluto’s system, which also contains Charon, Nix, and Hydra. The second-place goes to Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guarded the gates of the underworld.
- And, the recent meteoroid that struck Chelyabinsk, Russia, has been traced back to the Apollo family of near-Earth asteroids.
